LVT or sheet vinyl? Choosing the right system
Both are resilient vinyl floors; they solve different problems. Flowfloor supply and fit both, so you get the one your rooms actually need.
Luxury vinyl tile (LVT)
LVT is the plank-and-tile format — wood and stone visuals with bevelled edges, laid in patterns from straight plank to herringbone and basketweave. Individual planks can be lifted and replaced if one is ever damaged, and the thicker commercial wear layers (0.55mm+) take serious retail footfall. Glue-down LVT gives the most solid, quiet result; click systems suit refurbishments where the floor may need to lift again.
Sheet vinyl
Sheet vinyl runs in wide rolls with few or no seams — the practical choice for kitchens, utility rooms and rental properties, and the only sensible one where waterproofing matters more than looks. Modern cushioned sheets are warmer and quieter underfoot than most people expect.
The part that decides how it looks: the subfloor
Vinyl is thin and honest — every ridge, screw head and adhesive lump in the base will read through the surface within weeks. Most of the labour in a good vinyl job happens before the vinyl arrives: smoothing compounds, ply overboarding and moisture checks. It's why we run our own subfloor preparation rather than subcontracting the bit that makes the difference.

How we fit vinyl and LVT
- Survey and measure. Room-by-room, including moisture testing on ground floors and new screeds — the silent killer of vinyl floors.
- Preparation. Smoothing compound or plywood as the base demands, feathered flat so the finish lies like it was poured.
- Fitting. Pattern-scribed sheet or set-out LVT — centred, balanced and aligned to the room's sight lines, not just started from a wall.
- Finishing. Trims, thresholds and sealant, then a walk-round with you before we call it done.

Quick answers to the questions we hear most about vinyl and LVT.
Is LVT better than laminate?
For most spaces, yes. LVT is fully waterproof, quieter underfoot and far more resistant to dents and chips. Laminate can be cheaper upfront, but LVT usually wins on lifetime cost.
How long does LVT flooring last?
Quality LVT with the right wear layer lasts 15 to 25 years domestically and 10 to 15 in commercial use. We’ll specify the correct wear layer for your traffic levels, not just the prettiest sample.
Can you fit LVT over underfloor heating?
Yes, most LVT is compatible with water and electric underfloor heating up to 27C surface temperature. We confirm compatibility as part of the survey.
How soon can we walk on it?
Immediately after installation in most cases. Full furniture loading is usually fine within 24 hours depending on the adhesive used.
Is LVT waterproof?
The planks themselves are, and a glue-down LVT floor is highly water-resistant. For rooms that get properly wet — wet rooms, commercial kitchens — welded sheet or safety vinyl is the watertight answer. We'll tell you honestly where each belongs.
Can LVT be laid over underfloor heating?
Yes — most quality LVT is rated for water-based and electric UFH up to 27°C surface temperature. Glue-down systems conduct heat better than click-and-underlay. We check the manufacturer rating against your system before fitting.
How long does vinyl or LVT flooring last?
Commercial-grade LVT carries 10–20 year warranties and domestic floors routinely outlast them; sheet vinyl typically gives 10–15 years. The honest caveat: those lifespans assume proper preparation — vinyl on a bad base fails in the first year, whatever the brand.
Can you fit herringbone LVT?
Yes — herringbone, chevron, basketweave and borders. Pattern work takes more setting out and more cuts than straight plank, which is reflected in the fitting price, but it transforms a room.
Do you move furniture and take up the old floor?
Yes — uplift and disposal of the old floor, furniture moving and appliance reconnection can all be included in the quote, so the job is genuinely start-to-finish.
