What is safety flooring?

Safety flooring is vinyl flooring with slip-resistant particles — typically carborundum, quartz or aluminium oxide — embedded through the wear layer rather than coated on top. That distinction matters: because the grip runs through the material, it cannot wear off, and the floor keeps its slip rating for its whole service life.

Slip resistance is measured on the R-scale (R9–R13) and by pendulum test values (PTV). Broadly, R10 suits general commercial areas, R11 covers kitchens and areas with occasional spills, and R12–R13 is specified where floors are routinely wet, greasy or barefoot. Flowfloor match the rating to your slip-risk assessment rather than defaulting to the most aggressive — over-specified floors are harder to clean, and a floor that never gets cleaned properly is its own hazard.

Wet-room safety vinyl is welded at every seam and coved up the wall to form a watertight tray, with barefoot-rated grip that doesn't feel like sandpaper. It's the standard specification for accessible bathrooms, care homes and school changing areas — and increasingly for adapted domestic bathrooms, which we also install.

How a safety floor is installed properly

  1. Survey and slip-risk review. We confirm the R-rating or PTV your risk assessment actually requires, area by area.
  2. Subfloor preparation. Safety vinyl telegraphs every lump in the base — so moisture testing, smoothing compounds and repairs come first. See our subfloor preparation service.
  3. Installation. Sheets are pattern-scribed, fully adhered and hot-welded at every seam; wet areas get coved skirtings and sealed penetrations.
  4. Handover. Weld-tested, documented, and handed over with a cleaning regime that preserves the slip rating — the wrong polish can undo an R12 floor.

What R-rating do we need?

It depends on the contamination risk: R10 suits most general wet-risk areas, while commercial kitchens typically need R11 to R12. We assess area by area rather than blanket-specifying.

How is safety flooring cleaned?

With standard neutral cleaners and the right machine pads, the slip-resistant particles run through the wear layer, so performance does not mop away.

Can it be installed without closing the ward or kitchen?

Usually, yes. We phase work in sections, and fast-track adhesives allow areas back into service quickly.

Does safety flooring have to look clinical?

Not any more, modern ranges include wood and stone effects that meet full slip standards.

What R rating do I need for my safety flooring?

It depends on the contamination the floor will see. As a rule of thumb: R10 for general commercial areas, R11 for kitchens and areas with occasional water or grease, R12–R13 for routinely wet, greasy or barefoot areas. Your slip-risk assessment is the deciding document — we'll help you read it and match the specification.

Is safety flooring only for commercial buildings?

No — we regularly fit safety vinyl in domestic wet rooms, adapted bathrooms and utility areas, where the combination of watertight welded seams and barefoot grip makes it the sensible choice.

Does safety flooring lose its grip over time?

Genuine safety flooring shouldn't — the slip-resistant particles run through the full wear layer, so the grip is renewed as the surface wears. What does kill slip resistance is the wrong cleaning regime: greasy residue or polish films sitting on top of the profile. We hand over a cleaning method that keeps the rating.

Can safety flooring go over my existing floor?

Sometimes, but only over a sound, smooth, dry base. Most failed safety floors we replace failed because of the subfloor, not the vinyl — which is why preparation is part of every quote we give rather than an optional extra.

How long does safety flooring take to install?

A typical domestic wet room is one to two days including preparation. Commercial areas depend on size and how much subfloor work is needed — we phase work around live operations, including nights and school holidays, and give you a fixed programme before we start.
